The UCLA-LPPI Latino Applied Policy Research Awards will support the translation of academic research into public-facing briefs that will inform local, state, or national policies. Through these awards, LPPI will support investigators and their teams through awards of up to 12 months to expedite the uptake of evidence-based practices, interventions, and policies to policymakers and other non-academic stakeholders that will use the findings to generate positive change for Latinos and other communities of color.

National Latina Wage Gap Has Narrowed Just Seven Cents Since 1990

Despite substantial gains in educational attainment and a growing presence in the U.S. workforce, Latinas continue to face one of the largest wage gaps among women in the United States and California, according to two new UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute (LPPI) data briefs examining national and California wage trends from 1990 to 2025.

Washington State’s Latino Eligible-Voter Population Grew 224% Since 2000

The findings also show that Latino eligible voters have the highest labor-force participation rate among the state’s major racial and ethnic groups, at 74%, and play an important role across many sectors of Washington’s economy, from education and health services to construction, agriculture, retail, and hospitality.

The researchers examined how changes under H.R. 1, the Department of Homeland Security’s new public charge rule, and California’s restrictions on Medi-Cal enrollment could affect enrollment in public programs for Latino families across the state. Together, these policies create three overlapping pathways to benefit loss: direct exclusion under new rules, procedural loss due to reporting or renewal requirements, or withdrawal from programs due to fear of potential immigration consequences.

The findings are based on 11 in-depth interviews conducted nine months after the Eaton Fire with outdoor workers who were employed or seeking employment during cleanup and recovery. The study is based on a limited qualitative sample intended to document workers’ experiences rather than represent all workers involved in recovery.
