Symposium Democracy & Voting Rights

Demography, Redistricting and Power

LPPI and UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs co-hosted the symposium, “Demography, Redistricting and Power,” where leaders and scholars convened to discuss the growing electoral power of Latinos.

On May 31, 2019, LPPI partnered with the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs to co-host: ‘Demography, Redistricting and Power,’ a symposium in honor of Dr. Leobardo Estrada. A keynote address by Arturo Vargas of NALEO centered on the 2020 Census and demonstrated how Estrada’s early strides in population research and his long service as an advisor to the U.S. Census Bureau resonate today. Professor Matt Barreto moderated a panel with former L.A. County Supervisor Gloria Molina, Thomas Saenz of MALDEF, Maria Blanco of the UC Immigrant Legal Services Center and former California Senate Majority Leader Richard Polanco on redistricting and minority vote dilution.
