UCLA LPPI Statement on Allegations Against Cesar Chavez
“We are deeply troubled by the allegations reported this week regarding Cesar Chavez. We at the UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute (LPPI) acknowledge the profound pain this moment brings to many in our communities, particularly to those who have long looked to the farmworker movement as a source of dignity, courage, and collective struggle.
“LPPI stands with Dolores Huerta, Ana Murguia, Debra Rojas, and with all survivors of sexual violence whose experiences have too often been minimized, doubted, or obscured by power. Their decision to speak publicly requires tremendous courage, and their accounts deserve to be met with seriousness, care, and accountability.
“At the same time, we strongly believe that the legacy of the farmworker movement has never belonged to any one person. It was built through the sacrifice, leadership, and persistence of thousands of farmworkers and their families and communities who fought for safer working conditions, fair treatment, and basic human dignity. Their work has changed this country, and their ongoing struggles remain urgent today.”
If you, or someone you know, is a survivor of sexual violence, please know that there are resources.
