Isabella B. Arzeno-Soltero is an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Her research spans a wide array of topics, all rooted in the concept of coastal resilience. She explores innovative strategies for utilizing seaweed to improve the well-being of communities. This includes initiatives like employing seaweed for bioremediation, ultimately mitigating the formation of coastal hypoxic zones that affect both community and ecological health. She serves as the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Coastal Community Resilience Lab (CCRL) and a co-PI of the civil and environmental engineering department’s Center for Community Engagement and Environmental Justice (CEEJ).
Arzeno-Soltero cultivates close collaborations with scholars from diverse disciplines to gain a comprehensive understanding of integrated socio-environmental systems, and she places a strong emphasis on active engagement with local communities. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Arzeno-Soltero enjoys collaborating on issues that particularly affect Latines. Currently, Arzeno-Soltero works in the Salton Sea alongside the nonprofit organization Alianza Coachella Valley. She has collaborated with community members and other colleagues to create the Salton Sea Environmental Timeseries, a community science initiative.
