The knowledge, skills, professionalism, and confidence I’ve gained in the fellowship have significantly enhanced my competitiveness in pursuing my career goals.

In my second year as a Policy Fellow at the UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute (UCLA LPPI), I reflect on the remarks I first heard about this exceptional institute: “Have you heard of UCLA LPPI? They’re so cool.” The simple language encapsulates the remarkable work of its staff and fellows, leading advocates for Latinos and communities of color in the United States. I am proud and deeply grateful to be part of this community.

My journey began with a passion for policy and a drive for change, unsure of the path to follow. Then, I met Juana Hernandez Sanchez, the director of programs at UCLA LPPI, whose passion for advancing students’ professional development inspired me to apply. Thanks to the Institute’s extensive reach and partnerships, my application was a door to a world of opportunities.

Throughout my first year as a fellow, I benefited from workshops, Univision Studios visits, and professional conferences. I engaged with Latina leaders, advocated for important bills like SB 702, and witnessed the impactful work UCLA LPPI was doing firsthand. This summer, I transitioned to the Programs/Leadership Department, co-authoring a published article and working closely with everyone on the team. Their mentorship and support have been invaluable as I pursue my career goals, including a project supporting UCLA’s Chicanx Latinx Law Review.

The knowledge, skills, professionalism, and confidence I’ve gained as a UCLA LPPI fellow have significantly enhanced my competitiveness in pursuing my career goals.

On a personal note, being a fellow has allowed me to share exciting experiences with my family, sparking their enthusiasm. I thank everyone, including Sonja Diaz, the Founding Executive Director, and the leadership for this incredible fellowship. I share my experience to encourage students who resonate with the Institute’s mission to apply. As I enter my senior year, I am eager to continue contributing to UCLA LPPI’s mission and welcome the new cohort of fellows.
